Instead of " porting and polishing the coolant passages" try and make the engine look "like new" with some cleaning and painting. With a non-functioning EGR you can have pinging and need to use the better quality gasoline to drive the Corvette in the warmer weather. The EGR is an important component in your Emissions system and it helps the engine run a bit cooler combustion chamber temperatures. If the engine were running it would change the idle a little. If you put some vacuum in the hose connected to the EGR you should see the EGR move "up and down" a little bit. I would verify that your is operating and still working before going too far. The cause of my failure was the EGR Solenoid failed first and then the EGR followed soon after. Getting the carbon out of the intake was a major job after the EGR failed. One thing I did when I replaced my EGR was to bead blast the plenum and runners and then treated them to a new coat of silver paint. I matched up as many of the gaskets as I could when I rebuilt my engine. This is not too hard and can help your engine in the long run. I was really surprised how many gaskets needed to be trimmed back to have a smooth passageway. I wish I could have bought the newer Air Gap's with the silver ceramic coating. That worked out okay but took a LOT of polishing to make it look "okay". I then used the Eastwood kit to try and polish my new Edlebrock RPM Air Gap intake manifold. I bought a kit from Eastwood to Port and Polish your engine components and started away on a piece of junk and was surprised how ling it takes to make any changes on the cast iron so the chance or ruining a cylinder head was less than working on an Aluminum cylinder head. If you have not ported a cylinder head before you might experiment on a junk head before touching the good ones. The Summit cam I just put in my motor was only $300. Also Elgin is another good source of budget cams that work well. Summit Racing has some great American made budget cams. I would look at off the shelf grinds and avoid custom stuff to keep costs low. lolĪs far as a cam goes there are literally thousands of options out there. This is a great way to avoid the wife though. You're going to have A LOT of time invested in this for 20 to 30 hp. There is a reason port work is expensive. He explains how to calculate your opening size for valves and a lot of other great info. He has a great way of showing how to port heads in street cars. Look up a YouTube channel called Headflow Inc. Then I got a set of sanding rolls at Harbor Freight for polishing. They didn't cost a lot but they worked very well. If the heads are aluminum then also get a set of long shank single flute burrs from ebay. They also work to clean up aluminum heads after the rough cutting is done. This works well to open up the valve openings to whatever percentage you're going for. I also got a set of double cut burrs there. Any suggestions on the tool that worked best for you? Any suggestions on a cam?I went to Harbor Freight and picked up a cheap straight head die grinder. Thanks phobos84, I will have the heads apart to do guide seals so I will probably try and give it a shot. I could have done a better job on the polishing end. And if I ever do another set I will probably invest more time. But I probably have over 30 hours into it. All the tools I needed cost me under $150. I won't get to try them out until Christmas break but I'm hoping for 20 hp or so out of them over un-ported. Earlier this year I ported a set of 799's myself. There are a lot of awesome YouTube tutorials on how to port your own heads for street applications It's not even funny. My question is 1) will Port and polish on the plenum, tunes, intake and heads be worth it? How much of a gain can I expect? How much material needs to be removed to make a difference? Thank you in advance for your thoughts.I don't think your going to gain a whole lot on porting the intake. Going to have long tube headers, Budget won't allow much more at this point. Here's a link to that story… Īnyway so I I've got a short block ready to go in gonna use my stock heads, Was wanting to Maybe step up the Cam a little bit, already has magnaflow exhaust, has the cat at the crossover for now but will delete. I bought a 87 convertible For my dad it was supposed to be a quick and easy project that I could give him when it was It's finished. Ok, another question for the vette minds.
